This month’s photo celebrates some of my finest memories of a dear and beloved friend, Denise Fisher, and all of her cherished “critters” at the very magical Angel Ridge Ranch in Ridgway, Colorado.

This is Azul, a not-so-tame Arabian Stallion, who was so kindly taken in and cared for by Denise at his time of need.  I was lucky enough to rub noses with this very handsome guy during one of my visits.  He was actually quite curious and somewhat flirtatious – another friend I’ll always remember.  He’s nuzzling with one of the caretakers in this photo.
I was blessed to cross paths with Denise on a wintery getaway weekend, New Year’s Eve, 2007.  We became instant, bonded friends when she welcomed us and our two dogs, Echo & Wile E., into her home – a lovely bed and breakfast and ranch, nestled on 53 acres of some of the most stunning country in Colorado.  We had the entire 4-bedroom Victorian house to ourselves for the weekend, and she came over each morning to cook pancakes and sausage for all of us (dogs included).  We talked and laughed as if we had known each other for a lifetime.

From that visit forward, we made sure to travel her way and stop in for a couple of days whenever possible.  She was a dear, kind-hearted, smiling delight of a person, and I miss her greatly.  All she ever wanted to do was save animals and turn that Ranch into a non-profit rescue organization.

Since her untimely passing in 2011, the Humane Society purchased the property and opened up Second Chance Humane Society.  They have done amazing things and have saved many lives already.  I like to think they’re doing it to honor her in some way.  Read more about the great work they’re doing at Angel Ridge Ranch today at: http://adoptmountainpets.org/
