Hummingbird Highway Ready for Action!

Hummingbird Highway Ready for Action!

The very greatly anticipated time is drawing near!

Soon, our beloved Hummingbird friends will begin to return – one by one – to our sanctuary in Southern Colorado.  I long for their cheerful voices at dawn, their curious and friendly nature by day, and their fabulous sunset performances every night.

We fondly refer to the south side of our house as “Hummingbird Highway.”  This is where more than seven different types of Hummers enjoy hanging out together, fighting for nectar, and providing for us daily entertainment.

IMG_8990Last year (our first full summer in our new home), we were blessed with what we figured to be approximately 500 Hummingbird visitors per day, throughout the months of June, July, and August.  Yes, 500!  How do I know that?  Well, I don’t…for sure.  But we kept a fairly accurate record of how much nectar we provided for our beloved friends each day.  Based on what an average Hummer weighs, and the average amount of nectar one Hummer consumes in a day….well, we arrived at that very astounding number!

IMG_8949We have come to love these wonderful, tiny birds as if they are part of our family.  Some of our regulars have even earned names like “Black Beard” and “Biff”.

So, with this post, I welcome them all back with glad and open arms.  Hummingbird Highway is clear and ready for action!  Birders welcome 🙂

  1. Well done, Honey! If this doesn’t make everyone who reads this want to stop in for a visit I don’t know what would. The Hummers couldn’t have written it better themselves! Love to my little nature lover. You’ve been blessed with a warm and soulful heart. XO

      1. Hi Honey. I really liked this post. I, too, fell for the lovable little creatures. I don’t know how anyone could resist their charm once experienced. Looking forward to seeing them compete this summer.
        Love, Dad
